Burberry Beauty Lip Cover Soft Satin Lipstick in Devon Sunset Review, Comparisons

Last week I picked up one of Burberry Beauty's new lipstick shades for Spring 2012, called Devon Sunset No. 28 ($30).  As usual with Burberry, it's love!

The formula is divine, and the color is perfect for spring (and summer)!

More details, photos, and swatches after the jump!

This shade was exceedingly difficult to photograph.  I would describe it as a peach with pink and a tiny bit of orange in it.  The result is a pretty coral-y peach - just like a sunset.  It is a bright color, but historically I am afraid of brights and this color is not too bright for me.  It brings life to my pale face without overpowering it.  There is a softness to the color that keeps the brightness in check.

Here are several pictures of the bullet.  I wasn't sure which to include, so I included them all:

Here are some swatches of Devon Sunset.  These are good representations of the color:

I also did a comparison among some other peachy coral-y shades in my collection: Chanel Rouge Coco in Peregrina, Chanel Rouge Allure in Disenvolte, MAC Lipstick in Ever Hip, Rouge Bunny Rouge Sheer Lipstick in Fluttering Sighs, and Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Liberte and Evasion.

The photos were taken in direct sunlight and they came out much more orange than real life ... I just couldn't get them to cooperate.  I still wanted to share them with you though, so you can get an idea, and I will try to do this again when there is more sunlight (which is difficult at this time of year in the Pacific Northwest):

I found that in person, Devon Sunset was extremely similar to MAC Ever Hip.  It was difficult to tell the shades apart, but if pressed I would say that Devon Sunset is a half a smidge brighter and *maybe* a tiny bit pinker.  That's a big maybe. The difference is mainly in the formula and finish; Devon Sunset is creamy and almost opaque, while Ever Hip is more sheer and shiny.  If formula and finish aren't that important to you, then you don't need both.  MAC Ever Hip was limited edition, so if you missed out on it this is a good, albeit more expensive, alternative.  I didn't feel that any of the others were that close to Devon Sunset.

I love the formula for Burberry's lipsticks.  I find them to be creamy, pigmented, and moisturizing with average wear time.  My lips are notoriously dry, so I personally value moisturizing qualities over wear-time.  My lips actually feel better after using these lipsticks (and Burberry's glosses as well).  I do need to exfoliate my lips before using the lipsticks though, as the creaminess can accentuate dry spots.  Please note that I need to exfoliate my lips prior to wearing any lipstick at all.

The new shades are available in the U.S. at Nordstrom's website and at select counters.  I am not sure about international availability of the Spring Collection at this time, but will update when I receive more information!

  1. This looks so beautiful. I hope I manage to get my hands on it - is it limited edition?

  2. Nazia - As far as I know, all the Spring products are permanent. Burberry's other releases so far all have been permanent, and there hasn't been any indication that this one is not permanent as well. Yay!

  6. JKang - I don't have Flirt but I did look at it in-store and I have other Rouge Coco Shine shades. I can't speak to the color exactly, other that to say Flirt is quite similar. What I can tell you for certain is that the formulas are completely different. The RCS formula is sheer and glossy, and doesn't last very long. It also dries out my lips unless I reapply frequently. Burberry's lipsticks are creamy, opaque, and moisturizing with much more lasting power than the RCSes. I feel like Burberry's lipsticks are more bang for your buck to be quite honest, but it really depends on what you are going for and which look is your preference. Even if Flirt and Devon Sunset were exactly the same shade though, I think they would look different because of the disparity between the formulas. Hope that helps!
